When building or renovating a house, developers and architects may be wondering when it is worth deciding on an aluminium front door. In addition to durability, the main argument may be that aluminium can deliver dimensions and solutions that neither wood nor plastics allow.

The front door is the element of a house that we come into contact with most frequently. It is also worth considering that if a guest comes to us, he or she will certainly come into physical contact with this structure. Therefore, it is important that we choose our front door carefully and consider as many aspects as possible. Aluminium solutions, although priced in the high-end categories, prove to be a good choice in the long run, as this material retains its quality, even after decades, and it offers many options in size and combination that could not be accomplished with other materials. Hinge options and automation options are the most abundant among these solutions, so they are the best choice for ‘smart homes’. From a security point of view, premium products may also be installed: face recognition systems, remotely controlled opening / closing solutions, telephone-connected security systems, and, due to its bulkiness, aluminium itself is considered a line of “security”.

Of course, design is also of paramount importance when choosing a front door. Aluminium structures may be combined not only with metal or glass, but also with wood. These composite structures may even be integrated into a more organic-looking house. And aluminium structures provide almost infinite variations in colour and style.

Reflecting the environment with closing systems
The KAV approach helped a lot in its implementation. They talk to the customer and they don't want to sell a product, they want to answer questions and look for a solution. I did not have to choose from a catalogue, so I was not forced to choose from a set of solutions, but was offered individual solutions to a given problem. Of the companies I worked with, KAV gave me the most technical support.

Aluminium curtain wall with arches and large glass surfaces
Aluminium curtain wall with arches and large glass surfaces
The design was one of the biggest challenges in the production and installation of the aluminium doors and windows of the Reformed Kindergarten in Svábhegy, since more than 700 individual solid angles had to be calculated to create the aluminium curtain wall, which was not only a segmental arch, but also broken at the bottom and top edges. We talked about this process with Zoltán Erdélyi, KAV’s senior engineer.

A smart home requires a different kind of building use awareness
Smart homes are no longer a feature of futuristic novels and films but a part of our present. When building premium-class homes, automation and building systems that help its inhabitants’ live are often a basic requirement, which also affects the design of windows and doors. Our new series introduces you to the world of smart homes. Our goal is to provide adequate knowledge for decision-making and for starting the design of a house.

Facade structures for full transparency
Curtain walls connect several large glass surfaces into a single structure, many times in an invisible manner. Initially these elements were exclusively used in communal building technology but, with the penetration of the minimalistic style, it also appeared in the family home segment. Today it is the most dynamically developing branch of the closing structure market, in that these surfaces are suitable for individual solutions where only the imagination of the client and the designers can set the boundaries.

Special KAV doors and windows in Költő Kert
MTVA's innovation magazine program, Novum, made a report on the special glass elements and door and window solutions of the 5,000 square meter Költő Kert villa park, a building complex that is also considered special in Europe. Environmental awareness, innovation, organic architectural elements with transparent huge glass surfaces, and a way of thinking in which visual culture also plays a prominent role. One of the biggest challenges in the Költő Kert villa park was the special solutions that the KAV staff had to create at the junction of the raw concrete surface and the glass membrane. Károly Lovász highlighted in the report that KAV's engineers and employees had to solve many challenges during the planning and execution, whether it was thermal technology, sun protection, mechanical engineering, glass railing connections or waterproofing. The result is a simultaneously organic and high-tech building, which is considered exceptional in Hungary not only in its appearance, but also in its innovations.

Windows in the Design Process from an Architect’s Perspective
The question of when to engage window experts in the design process often arises. In this context, architect and head of the Archista architectural firm, László Kenyeres, shares his experiences. He believes that in today's architectural design process, windows and doors are a critical aspect because they represent one of the most complex parts of a building. Therefore, even those not well-versed in the world of windows may require external assistance to confidently complete an execution plan.

The house that fascinates with its clean simplicity
Premium, minimalistic, clean simplicity – these are the adjectives that immediately come to our mind seeing the residential property dreamt on the basis of the Porsche design. The building was implemented after a design process, unusual from an architect’s point of view, since the developer arrived with very specific plans and designs. We talked about this extraordinary work with the architect, István Unicsovics.

Do we need large glass surfaces everywhere?
Our colleagues are increasingly encountering residential building plans in which large glass surfaces dominate. These concepts are understandable not only from a design perspective but also because of transparency, connection with the environment, and the continuous influx of light. However, in many cases, they cannot be realized, or they require significantly higher investments and more complex alterations to the plans. In our new series, we explore the topic of the dimensions of glass surfaces with Mr. Károly Lovász, the CEO of KAV, and Mr. Csaba Mravik, the Chief Development Engineer.

The Architect needs to think with the door and window specialist
People at KAV can think together with the project, suggesting fancy solutions that often go beyond installation instructions. They think about it, add some parts that make a door trendy, no matter how strange it sounds at first. They feel the fine details that need to be put into it. They can think together with their architect colleague.

The key to the realisation of large-scale glass structures is thinking together
Huge glass structures are definitive elements of modern buildings. It is therefore especially important that architects create the plans while thinking together with sector designers. On the questions arising while designing and constructing glass façades, we spoke with chartered architect György Mihály Stocker, reader in the BUTE and vice-president of ALUTA, who played an outstanding role as specialist consultant in the construction of the Hungarian House of Music in its present form.

The relationship between aluminium doors and windows and the façade
In parallel with the advent of the latest aluminium door and window solutions, including filigree case systems and large glass surfaces, façades have also been transformed in the family home market. In addition to functionality, design also plays a key role in more and more buildings. However, architects rarely involve professionals in the process of designing doors, windows and façades. According to Krisztián Vatai, executive director of Facade Design & Building, who is engaged in the design, construction and production of façades, a change of attitude and education is needed to change this.

Choose big aluminium windows and doors!
The use of aluminium doors and windows in family homes allows increasingly large glass surfaces to appear in residential buildings. Because we spend a large part of our time indoors, high-transparency aluminium windows and sliding doors help to create an almost direct connection with the environment. We discussed with Károly Lovász, the managing director of KAV Hungária, why it is worth choosing large doors and windows.
