Smart homes are no longer a feature of futuristic novels and films but a part of our present. When building premium-class homes, automation and building systems that help its inhabitants’ live are often a basic requirement, which also affects the design of windows and doors. Our new series introduces you to the world of smart homes. Our goal is to provide adequate knowledge for decision-making and for starting the design of a house.

“In Hungary, the door and window solutions for standard smart homes are far less technically advanced than in Western Europe or the United States. In Hungary, these systems usually use the following solutions: the glazed sliding walls of the facade can be powered by a motor, the blinds are motorised, which may be operated with a wall push button or possibly with a phone or tablet. In many cases, the lack of professionals also makes it difficult to spread innovative solutions, which are also supported abroad by the manufacturers and software servers of the engineering systems. They are building much more complex systems, with more complex building management solutions, and what is more they can save a lot of energy this way,” says Károly Lovász, head of KAV.

It is worth defining here what we mean under a smart home. Most importantly, all the technological solutions used in a building should be operated integrated into a single system, even when nobody is at home. It is important that additional features can be added to the system as needed. The goal is that, through programming, the house “learns” and recognises our habits and lifestyles, and responds to external conditions – e.g. weather changes – and develop its own optimum performance. Not only does this save its residents’ time and energy, but with some features you can also reduce the ecological footprint of your property.

There are many types of systems that may be varied in countless ways, but within a building their common collaboration needs to be integrated into a building management system. “The operation of the various parts of the building management system must be perfectly and comprehensibly translated into the computer ( I / O) language, which requires a very high level of expertise. The computer doesn’t think for us; you have to programme it with what it should do when it gets some information or reaches a value. Unfortunately, the lack of expertise in Hungary is really a serious problem, which is why we are among the last in the smart home market in Europe. Talking to our clients, I realise they understand that a smart home requires a different kind of building use awareness. If you get a broad spectrum of information about a particular solution, you are more likely to choose the more expensive but also more automated version,” emphasises Károly Lovász.

Architectural design of aluminium doors and windows in our time
The aim of the KAV team is to provide our customers with all the solutions for their unique doors and windows needs, whether it may be a minimal window, a frameless sliding door, an aluminium front door, a blind or even a curtain wall. Most customers start looking for windows when they already have the finished designs, but we increasingly often see, during the consultations, that these designs are not detailed enough. We talked about the correlation between architectural designs and the door and window solutions with Csaba Mravik, KAV Hungária’s chief development engineer of.

Choose big aluminium windows and doors!
The use of aluminium doors and windows in family homes allows increasingly large glass surfaces to appear in residential buildings. Because we spend a large part of our time indoors, high-transparency aluminium windows and sliding doors help to create an almost direct connection with the environment. We discussed with Károly Lovász, the managing director of KAV Hungária, why it is worth choosing large doors and windows.

The issue of shading is becoming increasingly important
The changing economic environment and rising energy prices are also impacting the construction industry. But how might the market for premium segment windows change? According to KAV's CEO, Károly Lovász, the focus will shift towards the issue of shading, and it is crucial for builders to select companies with a stable background and a qualified workforce.

Aluminium window trends based on customer needs
When it comes to aluminium windows and doors, the name ‘KAV’ has become associated with custom client needs. Many of the ideas and plans that come to our attention can lead later on to the development of aluminium windows and doors. So, if we want to present the trends for 2022, it is worth starting with what Károly Lovász, Managing Director of KAV, and Csaba Mravik, Chief Development Engineer, have experienced and what products are now being sought by builders of family homes.

Dubai, the city of superlatives
Dubai is now the world's fastest-growing city; one that was built up over several decades, almost from scratch. Here you will find the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, 828 metres high; its airport is often called the most dynamic and artificial islands and breath-taking architectural structures attract millions of tourists to the city every year. The continuously growing Dubai will also be the venue for the 2020 Expo. This year, the professional path of the 20-year-old professional association, ALUTA, led to this metropolis presenting innovative architectural trends.

A communal gastronomic space where the fusion of outdoor and indoor is facilitated by KAV glass portals
BABA Budapest is not merely a restaurant; it is a space where one can feel at home throughout the day. The main principles of design focused on the seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces and the creation of a genuine sense of community experience. We had the opportunity to discuss the BABA with its lead designer, Dóra Fónagy, while sitting at one of its tables, and during our conversation, we ourselves experienced why it provides a truly unique experience.

We build for the future rather than for today
Clear shapes, large glass surfaces, spacious interior spaces and creative use of materials – these are the main features of the most predominant architectural style of our era, minimalistic design, in which interest is outstanding in Hungary. However, the number of really well designed and built minimalistic family homes is relatively low. The property our engineers consider as one of the best designed ones our company has met in recent years was built in Budapest. During the project we paid increased attention to the design of large, liberally designed glass surfaces, essential for creating open spaces. We had a conversation with the developer of the house about what was needed to create this property.

Aluminium windows and doors and the gluing technique
Unique windows and doors, large glass surfaces and narrow frames would not have become part of our building culture without developments in gluing technology. We talked to Gábor Farkas, head of the industrial glue technology division at Sika Hungária Kft., about the special fixing and sealing processes and innovations that have emerged in this field over the past decade. The cooperation between KAV and Sika goes back many years. In the beginning, they only supplied sealing materials for glass-to-glass connections made on-site, but today they supply KAV's factory workers and installation team with special materials and tools, and also train our engineers.

Windows in the Design Process from an Architect’s Perspective
The question of when to engage window experts in the design process often arises. In this context, architect and head of the Archista architectural firm, László Kenyeres, shares his experiences. He believes that in today's architectural design process, windows and doors are a critical aspect because they represent one of the most complex parts of a building. Therefore, even those not well-versed in the world of windows may require external assistance to confidently complete an execution plan.

Development by KAV of customised shades
The hot and dry summers experienced over the last few years due to climate change have made suitable shading solutions ever more important. However, the standard systems available on the market do not meet individual customer needs either in terms of movement mechanisms or their form. That is why KAV’s engineers are offering customised aluminium shades that reflect contemporary trends in building. Károly Lovász, Managing Director of KAV, provides an insight into these special solutions.

The Basics of Doors and Windows – A Conversation with Architect György Hoffmann
Huge, transparent surfaces that create almost a direct connection with the surroundings. Architect György Hoffmann believes that in modern architecture, there is no longer a need for walls, as windows and pillars can also fulfill the structural functions. Our conversation also reveals what primarily influences the thinking of architect-designers and what it takes to establish a common language between the client and the designer.

From now on, KAV assists the work of architects with a complimentary consulting service. This is because, closing systems are such special structural elements that their thorough knowledge and following the trends is nearly impossible for those not specialised in this field. Facade structures for full transparency
Curtain walls connect several large glass surfaces into a single structure, many times in an invisible manner. Initially these elements were exclusively used in communal building technology but, with the penetration of the minimalistic style, it also appeared in the family home segment. Today it is the most dynamically developing branch of the closing structure market, in that these surfaces are suitable for individual solutions where only the imagination of the client and the designers can set the boundaries.
